Aspartame induced seizures are not uncommon: Betty Martini

In reply to a Belgian study that documented a seizure after excessive consumption of diet coke

Eur J Emerg Med. 2008 Feb;15(1):51. Seizures and hyponatremia after excessive intake of diet coke.
Mortelmans LJ, Van Loo M, De Cauwer HG, Merlevede K.

Department of Emergency Medicine, Klina General Hospital, Brasschaat, Belgium. luc.mortelmans@klina.be

We describe a case of epileptic seizures after a massive intake of diet coke. Apart from the hyponatremia due to water intoxication the convulsions can be potentiated by the high dose of caffeine and aspartame from the diet coke. To our knowledge this is the first report of seizures due to excessive diet coke intake.

Betty Martini replied to Dr Luc Mortelmans with information that seizures are a common occurrence for people who regularly consume aspartame, a neurotoxic sweetener approved by the FDA over the contrary recommendations of their own scientists:

Dear Dr. Mortelmans:

Seizures from aspartame are notorious whether in Diet Coke or more than 6000 other products that contain this deadly addictive excitoneurotoxic carcinogenic drug that interacts with virtually all drugs and vaccines due to damage to the mitochondria.

First of all, it was proven in original studies. The RAO study was a 52 week oral toxicity performed on 7 infant monkeys. Five had grand mal seizures and one died. They used this as pivotal in the approval of aspartame! http://www.wnho.net/monkey_study.htm

Seizures are listed on the FDA list of 92 symptoms 5 times: www.mpwhi.com/92_aspartame_symptoms.pdf

In 1986 the Community Nutrition Institute in Washington, D.C. petitioned the FDA to ban aspartame because there were so many seizures and people were going blind from the free methyl alcohol, but they refused even though they tried to indict the manufacturer for fraud and revoked the petition for approval. Don Rumsfeld was responsible for getting aspartame marketed through political chicanery. This is discussed in the documentary, Sweet Misery: A Poisoned World, www.soundandfury.tv In the UK you can get it info@namastepublishing.co.uk

There is a chapter on aspartame triggered seizures in the medical text, Aspartame Disease: An Ignored Epidemic, www.sunsentpress.com by H. J. Roberts, M.D. It's also discussed in Excitotoxins: The Taste That Kills by neurosurgeon Russell Blaylock, M.D., www.russellblaylockmd.com

The phenylalanine, as an isolate and 50% of the molecule of aspartame lowers the seizure threshold and depletes serotonin, triggering psychiatric and behavioral problems. However, all three components of aspartame can trigger seizures.

An informant from Pfizer says when they reformulated Dilantin they added aspartame, and it's unlabeled. Basically anti-seizure medication will not work when someone is on aspartame. This is discussed in the medical text.

Another bit of information on this from Betty Martini (by email):

I just wanted to also mention so many of the aspartame experts have written on aspartame and seizures for years. Below is a comment from Dr. Ralph Walton who gives a reference.

I remember I was with Dr. H. J. Roberts at the American College of Physicians conference some years ago and we were in a neurology workshop. The professor said, "Can anyone in this room tell me why people all over the country are having seizures for no reason at all, even if its off the wall." Dr. Roberts asked me to answer him so I mentioned that aspartame is a seizure triggering drug and is used by 70% of the population, and why.

I also explained that pilots are having grand mal seizures in the cockpits of commercial airliners drinking diet drinks or Equal, and for this reason we have a Mission Possible Aviation. Then another physician raised his hand and explained the information is correct, that he is a physician and pilot and he has a friend who flies commercially, drinks diet drinks and has seizures and they have to report him.

Take this very seriously. Read on for Dr. Walton's comment.

He also refers to seizures in his paper:
http://www.mpwhi.com/aspartame_and_psychiatric_disorders.htm
It has been known that aspartame is a seizure triggering drug for over 30 years.

Hi Betty

I wrote about seizures and aspartame 20 years ago - the 1986 paper in Psychosomatics and Chapter 19 (on the role of aspartame in seizure induction) in the textbook "Dietary Phenylalanine and Brain Function" edited by Richard Wurtman and published in 1988.
