Unique opportunity: comment to the FDA about MSG (glutamate)

There is currently a Citizens Petition about removing
MSG from the list of safe food additives (the GRAS list).

The petition is open for worldwide comments until mid
June 2008.

The petition itself (submitted by John Erb) is an
excellent summary of the dangers and toxicity
of MSG.

Here is the online link:

If the link goes down additional information
and a sample letter can be found at:

I can only agree with the necessity for this action.

MSG gives me violent headaches, even in comparatively small quantities and it is almost impossible to tell from labels whether some food contains MSG. More often than not MSG is either not mentioned on the label or it hides under various weasel words like "aroma" or "spices", or "hydrolized protein".

In Europe, there is a number for MSG, but I find it very difficult to use that number system. There are hundreds of substances hidden behind what's called "E-numbers". This benefits manufacturers but does nothing for consumers to know what they are eating. There is hardly any public place where you can find out all about the e-numbers.

The Italian association La Leva di Archimede with which I work, has collected the information on E-numbers and is making it available on its website.

(MSG is E 621)

Can we Add Aspartame to the MSG Petition... I will sign for both! I don't buy anything with MSG... I know its harmful because ey it makes bad food seem almost good... and makes you eat way too much of it hence Doritos "You can't eat just one" I will be a wonderful day when we get all these dangerous additives and preservatives out of our food!
